Guyana: Unionized teachers to resume indefinite nationwide strike from May 9

Teachers affiliated with the Guyana Teacher's Union (GTU) plan to stage an indefinite nationwide strike starting May 9. The purpose of the action is to demand government action over various issues, including better wages and working conditions. The walk-out is an extension of a previous five-week nationwide strike that began in February.

Disruptions to educational services are likely during the work stoppage. Protests near government buildings and schools, including near the Ministry of Education office on Brickdam Street in Georgetown and education department offices in downtown Linden, are also likely for the duration of the strike. Heightened security and localized transport and business disruptions are possible around protest sites.
