How red24's risk ratings work
red24 rates countries worldwide on a scale from low to extreme risk.
In order to calculate the risks in each country, our team of global analysts utilises a wide range of sources. Housed in our state-of-the-art Crisis Response Management Centre, they receive around-the-clock news feeds from a wide variety of global, national and local news channels and websites. They also draw substantially from on-the-ground contacts and a worldwide network of security consultants, who provide invaluable insight into developing events and situations.
The risk indicator is based on a four-colour rating: green denotes a low risk, orange a medium risk, red a high risk and black an extreme risk. Each country is analysed according to crime levels, terrorism, threat of conflict, political stability, levels of kidnapping and degree of infrastructure. An overall rating and travel advisory are created for each country based on the level of these threats. red24 advises against all travel to countries and regions that are rated as extreme risk due to the significant threats posed to travellers there. However, should a client need to travel to an extreme-risk destination, red24 is still able to offer them remote and on-the-ground assistance.
A sample risk matrix:
Overall risk rating
| Overall | Medium | red24 rates this country as medium risk. Security threats exist but their impact is limited and not widespread. Caution and awareness is still advised. |
Risk rating breakdown
| Crime | Medium | A reasonable possibility of crime affecting the individual, involving mainly minor or petty crime. Violent crime is less likely. |
| Terrorism | High | Ongoing specific threat of terrorism with several attacks in recent years. More incidents are likely and security forces remain on high alert. |
| Conflict | Low | No current conflict and little threat of conflict occurring. |
| Political | Low | Stable political system; opposition to government policies only results in minor sporadic, mostly non-violent, civil unrest. |
| Kidnap | Low | Minimal or no reported kidnapping activity to both locals and visitors. |
| Infrastructure | Low | Developed infrastructure across the country. |
