About red24

Project Infundo
red24 Project Infundo is the South African-registered charity of red24. The charity was first established in 2007 with the support of Breadline Africa, a UK-registered charity which aims to break the cycle of poverty in southern Africa through life-changing projects. red24 Project Infundo has chosen to back a historically disadvantaged primary school situated in the affluent suburb of Constantia. The school provides education to children of farm labourers from the six surrounding farms, as well as to underprivileged children from the nearby Westlake area.

Constantia Primary School
Constantia Primary School, which accommodates 260 children taught by seven teachers, has a history dating back to 1920. At that time the area consisted mainly of farmlands, and the school provided education to the children of the Afrikaans parents who lived and worked on the surrounding farms. In the early 1970s the school was forced to relocate to its current position due to forced removals. Despite this displacement, the school continued to serve its purpose of providing a quality education to the poorest of the poor. Today it also provides education to the children of the many Xhosa parents who work in the area. In addition to receiving an education, many of the children receive their first meal of the day through a school feeding programme. The school has a fully functioning governing body and is run by a very committed headmaster, Mr Sam Frans.

Constantia Primary School continues as a beacon of hope for the underprivileged. Annual school fees of approximately GBP10.00 (R140.00) per child are charged, but many families are unable to pay even such a small amount. red24 aims to raise the outstanding school fees so that the school does not need to use its annual government-allocated budget to supplement these children. Projects for 2009

Achievements

red24 Project Infundo was able to raise enough money in 2008 to cover the school fees of 116 children.

Fundraising initiatives

  • red24 office deli days: hotdogs and/or toasted sandwiches were sold to staff and all proceeds went to Project Infundo.

  • Donations have been received from various clients throughout the year.

  • red24 CRM supported the school's annual white elephant sale by donating clothes, toys, books and homeware, which generated R14,000.

  • Project Infundo received a substantial donation from red24 plc, which was used to fix the leaking roof and ceiling of the Grade R class and to retile the school kitchen floor.

  • red24 Project Infundo consulted the school to understand their needs and priorities; their main objective was to supplement the salary of the Grade R (5-6 years of age) school teacher. Currently Grade R is not compulsory in South Africa; however, by 2015 it will be, as it is evident that children who complete Grade R have better motor and language skills and are socially more confident compared with children who have stayed at home and are often isolated from others their age. Consequently, the funds raised are being used to supplement the teacher's salary in 2009.

  • red24 Project Infundo also makes an annual contribution to the school's Christmas Party, providing funding for the party and presents for the children.

With further funding, more projects at the school can be completed, including the development of the school garden and the decoration of the classrooms. These projects will allow the staff and learners at the school to grow in an improved learning environment, while also allowing the staff and clients of red24 Project Infundo to participate in the continued educational growth of these children.
